Nine years ago today, The Scorpion King was released in North American theaters. While at the time it was kind of cool to see one of WWE’s top wrestlers in a heavily advertised action movie, the Rock’s transition into the mainstream that began with this film ultimately led to his seven year absence from the world of professional wrestling. He had appeared in The Mummy 2 prior to this, but The Scorpion King was his first of many leading roles in Hollywood.

Today, we know what the WrestleMania 28 main event is a year before the event. Had April 19, 2002 never happened, the complexion of wrestling since then, including next year’s WrestleMania, would have been impacted so extremely that it’s hard to fathom. While we can speculate, there’s really no telling how things would have turned out had the Rock not made the leap from the ring to the silver screen.
