Gertrude Vachon, more commonly known as Luna, was a tough-as-nails 2nd generation star who completed the 90’s promotional hat trick, wrestling in WWF, WCW, and ECW during her career. Trained by members of her family and The Fabulous Moolah, Luna grew up around the business and became involved in the sports entertainment industry at a young age.
Luna wrestled for years on the independent scene during the late 80s and early 90s before coming to the World Wrestling Federation in 1993. It was during her time on the indy circuit that she met her husband David Heath, better known to wrestling fans as Gangrel. Luna debuted in Vince McMahon’s Federation at WrestleMania IX, accompanying Shawn Michaels to the ring for his match with Tatanka. It was at that show that Luna began a long feud with HBK’s former valet Sensational Sherri. It just so happened that as Luna was feuding with Sherri, Bam Bam Bigelow sparked a rivalry with Sherri’s man, Tatanka. Naturally, Bam Bam and Luna wound up together. The Beast from the East was enamored by Luna’s eccentricities and began doing everything he could to win her affection. The duo of Bigelow and Luna had a successful run together, punctuated by a win over Doink & Dink at WrestleMania X.
After just over a year in the company, Luna departed the WWF and began accepting work in independent promotions again. She performed for in ECW during this time, being brought in by Tommy Dreamer as a figure out of Raven’s past. As part of the Raven / Dreamer feud, Luna was often involved physically with the men, and even notched a steel cage victory over Raven’s lackey Stevie Richards. In 1997, Luna had a brief stint in WCW, resuming her feud with Medusa that had begun in WWF years before.
In late ’97, Luna returned to the WWF. There, she became the manager of Goldust, and the two eventually engaged in a feud with Marc Mero & Sable that culminated in a loss for the bizarre pair at WrestleMania XIV. Luna’s feud with Sable carried on longer, and the two met again at Unforgiven ’98 in an evening gown match, with Luna gaining the victory. Down the line, the two patched up their differences and both became members of the Oddities, a quirky band of misfits. The harmonious co-existence of Luna and Sable was short-lived, though, and soon the women were feuding once more. The women had real life animosity with each other, and in early 1999, Luna was suspended after a backstage altercation with the blond bombshell. When she returned from the suspension, Luna worked primarily as the valet for her real-life husband, Gangrel, and the two partnered in mixed tag matches until her departure from the company in early 2000. On August 27, 2010, Vachon was found dead of what is believed to be an accidental overdose. Although she never won the Women’s Championship, she does have the legacy of being the first woman ever to appear in a WWF video game, Raw.
