Last week, the WWE hosted a press conference in Mexico to announce that Raw and Smackdown would emanate from the country for the first time in history this October. A handful of superstars were on hand for the media event, including John Cena, The Big Show, and Sin Cara. Also in attendance was WWE’s fastest rising Mexican star, Alberto Del Rio.
In addition to hyping the events coming to Mexico this fall, Del Rio had some interesting things to say. The Mexican elitist stated in very plain terms that it’s his goal to end the undefeated streak of the Undertaker at WrestleMania. While I don’t think the Undertaker’s streak ending is a possibility at this point, it would certainly make an intriguing story to pair him with Del Rio heading into the year’s biggest event.
With John Cena vs The Rock already set to headline WrestleMania 28, the Undertaker won’t be depended on to carry the show’s main event. As a result, the pressure to match him up against a top caliber star such as Shawn Michaels or Triple H should be alleviated. If Alberto Del Rio captures the WWE Championship between now and next spring, he can continue to speak of his destiny being fulfilled regardless of if he carries the title for any length of time or not. Once the Championship prophecy of Del Rio is completed, it stands to reason he’ll imagine the next stage of his destiny, and taking the Undertaker’s streak is a logical a choice as any. It’s interesting that with one main event already set this far in advance, the WWE seems to be planting the seeds for another. Should Undertaker vs Alberto Del Rio actually transpire at next year’s WrestleMania, mark me down as a fan of Taker’s opponent being a star experiencing a meteoric rise rather than an established main eventer like it’s been in recent years.
