Every Tuesday, we take a look at an outlandish character from wrestling’s days gone by. Sometimes laughable, sometimes revolting, but always preposterous, they’re part of what makes pro rasslin’ so great. Ranging from slightly peculiar to downright ludicrous, these are the wrestlers that time has rightly forgotten.
In the early 90’s, most of America’s youth got its first taste of hip hop culture. Will Smith was the Fresh Prince. Kid ‘n Play had their own Saturday morning cartoon. Rap was colorful and fun. WCW’s answer? PN News – an overweight rapper, complete with obnoxiously neon ring gear, studded glasses, and an oversized chain. Naturally, News would rap his way to the ring, although his rhymes were often far from fresh. His primary catch phrase, “Yo baby yo baby yo,” was shouted to the crowd and echoed back to him similar to R-Truth’s “What Up?” call, and it was done so in manner that blatantly attempted to cash in on Vanilla Ice’s super-catchy “Go ninja go ninja go.” Somehow, News found moderate success in WCW, wrestling “Stunning” Steve Austin and Diamond Dallas Page at consecutive Clash of the Champions events and flattening opponents with the Broken Record and the Rapmaster Splash. Although his time in the company was inevitably short-lived, PN News did manage to resurface in ECW as a member of Da Baldies for a two month stint in late 1999, seven years after his departure from the Atlanta-based promotion. Despite the brevity of his career, WCW’s lame attempt at creating an “urban” character did provide us with this absolutely ridiculous Great American Bash commercial.
