So WWE signed two new divas yesterday, and word is they’re not done. Wanting to add some female depth to their developmental system, the company is expected to continue to add new women over the next few weeks. As for the ones that inked deals yesterday…
Tenille Tayla, commonly billed simply as Tenille when appearing in the States, is an Australian wrestler who has spent time honing her craft in a number of independent promotions. Admittedly, I’ve only seen one of her matches in full (teaming with fellow Aussie Jessie McKay against the International Home Wrecking Crew on SHIMMER Volume 28), and she spent most of that match waiting on the apron for a hot tag. I did, however, watch some of her highlights from ECCW , and she takes a nasty German suplex in those. All things considered, she looks impressive enough, and while we’re probably not getting the next Trish Stratus here, I expect her to do more in the ring than much of the current crop. And hey, she was trained by Lance Storm, so I imagine she’s pretty fundamentally sound.
Sadly, the same cannot be said for WWE’s other newest diva, Brandi Alexis Reed. Reed, much like Kelly Kelly a couple years ago, has no wrestling experience to speak of. Instead, she’s a model who a WWE scout liked the look of, and as a result she was awarded a contract. Of course, that doesn’t mean she won’t develop into an in-ring star – if you’ll remember, Trish Stratus was hired with a similar resume. My only gripe is that there are plenty of actual talented female wrestlers out there who WWE continues to overlook *cough* Sara Del Rey *cough* in favor of more eye candy. Judging by the picture to the right, though, WWE could have done a lot worse in their attempt to deepen their pool of divas. I mean, even if she never pans out in the ring, Ms. Reed could always go the Sunny route and decorate somebody’s arm, right?
Is it weird to compare every female wrestler that comes down the pike to Trish Stratus? I hadn’t even realized that I do this, but it just happened twice in the same column. That’s normal, right? Yeah, that’s natural. Nothing to see here. Move along, move along.
It’s probably not fair to compare every diva to greatest diva of all time. That’s like comparing every new wrestler that comes up to Shawn Michaels.
