John Bradshaw Layfield and Stone Cold Steve Austin will meet in the first round of our Champion of Champions tournament, designed to determine your favorite champion of the past ten years.
JBL had a 13-year career in the WWE. During that time, he captured the WWE Championship, Intercontinental Title, European Title, and United States Championship, holding each belt one time. He was a 3-time Tag Team Champion with Faarooq as part of the Acolytes, and won the Hardcore Title a whopping 17 times. His reign as WWE Champion lasted 280 days, the longest run in Smackdown history. Layfield is a best selling author and former WWE broadcaster who is credited with conceiving the idea for WWE’s annual Tribute to the Troops. Some of JBL’s most memorable rivalries include those with Eddie Guerrero, John Cena, and Rey Mysterio.
Stone Cold Steve Austin was the most popular WWE’s Attitude Era. While he was active, Austin held the WWE Championship on 6 occasions, was a 2-time Intercontinental Champion, and a former Million Dollar Champ. He’s been a Tag Team Champion four times with four different partners. He won the 1996 King of the Ring, and is a 3-time Royal Rumble victor. Since his retirement, he’s been enshrined in WWE’s Hall of Fame. Today, eight years removed from his last wrestling match, Austin remains a top draw for the company whenever he appears. Among Austin’s most note-worth opponents are Bret Hart, The Rock, and Vince McMahon.
Austin and Bradshaw have been in the ring together before, both as tag team partners and as opponents. However, most of their interaction occured before Bradshaw adopted his JBL persona, the character with which he had the most success. Last night, the two former champions crossed paths for the first time in years, an encounter that left JBL writhing on the mat after two Stunners. Remember to return on Friday to vote for your favorite superstar in the first round of our Champion of Champions Tournament!
Fitting that Austin just stunned the Christ out of JBL on Monday. I imagine that is how that’s going to go.
