Randy Orton and Hulk Hogan will meet in the first round of our Champion of Champions tournament, designed to determine your favorite champion of the past ten years.
It’s hard to make a case for anybody being as important to the wrestling industry as a whole as Hulk Hogan. During the 1980s, Hulk Hogan launched wrestling into the mainstream, and without him, we probably never would have had a Monday Night War or Attitude Era to speak of. He’s a 12-time World Champion (6-time WWE, 6-time WCW), 2-time Royal Rumble winner, and headlined WrestleMania annually during his prime. Memorable opponents include Andre the Giant, Ultimate Warrior, and The Rock.
Randy Orton’s accomplishments are nothing to sneeze at either. He’s a 7-time World Champion and the 2009 Royal Rumble match winner. He’s a triple-crown winner, having held the World, Tag Team, and Intercontinental Championships in his career, a feat Hulk Hogan never accomplished. Since breaking into the main event scene in 2006, Orton has been a consistent contender to the World Title, and he’s the youngest World Champion ever in the WWE. Some of his more infamous feuds include those with Mick Foley, The Undertaker, and John Cena.
Keep in mind, while Hogan may have a more impressive resume, this tournament is to crown the best champion of the past decade. During that time span, Hogan only held the World Title for 28 days. Conversely, Randy Orton’s entire WWE career has fallen within those parameters. The two men have met in one high profile match before, at SummerSlam ’06, with Hogan leaving the victor. Also, interestly, both Orton and Hogan have been Tag Team Champions with another man in our tournament, Edge.
