Punk Plunges into the Indies

Gregory Iron is a 24-year-old independent wrestler who happens to suffer from Cerebral Palsy.  He’s limited in what he can do in the ring as a result, although my understanding of his work is that it’s pretty decent.  I’ve never seen him personally, nor had I ever heard of him until this weekend.  That’s when he got the rub of a lifetime.

After tag-teaming with Colt Cabana in the main event of an All-American Wrestling event in Berwyn, Illinois, Iron received some flattering words from the reigning WWE Champion, CM Punk.  Punk’s appearance at the indy event clearly had nothing to do with his storyline – he never mentioned his current relation to the WWE or being a “free agent.”  Instead, it seems like it was just Punk ruling as a human being and giving props to a guy who deserves it.  Gregory Iron’s story, as Punk pointed out, is an inspirational one, and I think we can all agree that what he’s doing is both admirable and awesome.  Hats off to Iron, and I sincerely hope that this exposure brings him continued success.  I know I’ll be going out of my way to check him out.

Meanwhile, despite it not furthering his current angle, this was CM Punk appearing at a wrestling event that wasn’t being produced by the WWE.  That, in and of itself, is pretty big news.  It also marked the first time that the Second City Saints stood in a ring together since their Ring of Honor days.  Watch the Champ’s appearance right here.
