Kurt Angle is one of my favorite wrestlers ever. I love his work ethic, his intensity, and his unmatched ring presence. He can put on a good match with anyone in the business, and for the most part, he’s kept his character from ever getting too stale. That being said, behind the scenes, he’s a bit of a maniac. Whether he’s promising the world an Olympic run at age 42, swearing that his Twitter was hacked, or insisting that he was stuck in a snow storm during dry conditions, his word isn’t always the most reliable. Such might be the case in regards to his recent interview with the The Sun in the UK. Angle had this to say:
“It was considered back in 2006. The person who wanted to do it was Undertaker himself. I was flattered, for him to go to Vince McMahon and pitch it. Undertaker at that point never had a five-star Wrestlemania moment match. He figured that the only one he could do it was me, at the time. Thank God a couple of years later he had Shawn Michaels, and it worked. But Undertaker really wanted to have that match, he asked Vince to push our match back from No Way Out to WrestleMania and, since I was champion they wanted me to keep the title, Undertaker was willing to take the loss. To me that meant a lot because Undertaker had a lot of respect for me — and I had more respect for him than he did for me.”
Maybe he’s telling the truth, but there are reasons to doubt. What jumps out to me the most is Angle’s claim that he’d go over the Undertaker because they wanted him to keep the title. At WrestleMania 22, the WrestleMania in question, Angle lost the title to Rey Mysterio in a triple threat match also involving Randy Orton. If they were fine with him dropping the belt to Rey, I’d see no reason why he wouldn’t drop the belt to Taker. Also, I’m of the believe that the Undertaker’s streak supercedes plans for any titles when WrestleMania season rolls along – it’s one of Mania’s biggest annual draws, and I doubt it would be ended to keep the belt on somebody else. At the very least, it’s interest food for thought. I’m sure Angle & Undertaker could have had an amazing match on the grand stage, but the idea of Kurt snapping the streak seems a little preposterous to me. What do you think?
