It’s hard to imagine a wrestling promotion without a top singles title, but that’s exactly what Chikara is. The company does recognize tag team champions, the Campeonatos de Parejas, and they host an annual tournament, the Young Lion’s Cup, but they lack a traditional World Champion. That’s due to change in the near future when Chikara launches the “12 Large” Tournament, a tribute to “Sweet ‘n’ Sour” Larry Sweeney. The 12-competitor round robin tournament will kick off at Aniversario & His Amazing Friends in Easton, PA on May 22 and continue the next night in Union City, NJ at Aniversario: The Legendary Super Powers Show. At this point, it’s unclear if the tournament will be contained to those two events or if it will span more shows beyond that weekend. Participants in the tournament, pictured above from left to right, include Claudio Castagnoili, Mike Quackenbush, Jigsaw, Vin Gerard, UltraMantis Black, Eddie Kingston, Brodie Lee, Fire Ant, Sara Del Rey, Amasis, Icarus, and Hallowicked.
As you may remember, I hold Chikara in very high regard; their recent King of Trios tournament was one of the best shows I’ve ever attended. I cannot tell you how excited I am for the crowning of their inaugural champion, and if you’re in the general vicinity of either show, I can’t recommend enough that you check them out. Please excuse my marking out over the next few weeks leading into the event.
