WWE is going to be releasing a 3-disc set entitled “The Very Best of WCW Monday Nitro” the first week of June, and well, it sounds pretty cool. I don’t usually cover DVD releases, but the cover art for this one was just released, and it’s just so full of nostalgic goodness that I couldn’t resist.
The match listing is pretty fantastic too. There are some matches from before WCW really hit its stride, including Brian Pillman vs Jushin “Thunder” Liger and a tag team match between Sting & Lex Lugar and The Road Warriors. Scott Hall’s arrival in the company and the formation of the nWo are obviously covered, with plenty of debuts, heel turns, and in-ring confrontations from the WCW vs nWo war highlighted. Other standout segments included are the return of the Four Horsemen, Chris Jericho’s reading of his 1,004 holds, and Vince McMahon purchasing the company. There are some historic title matches on this set as well, including Goldberg vs Hollywood Hogan and Sting vs Bret Hart. There’s plenty of action from the cruiserweight division too, with guys like Rey Mysterio, Kidman, and Juventud Guerrera all showcased on these DVDs. The lowlights are of course not overlooked in this package either, with the infamous finger poke of doom and the arrival of Vince Russo. In short, this DVD looks to be a true time capsule for the WCW half of the Monday Night War, and any fan of the era should look forward to its release.
